Nebulosa is a laboratory DC power profiler for the development of low-power hardware. A single capture records the complete power profile of a device, including deep-sleep leakage, radio transmissions and wake-up transients. Six automatically switched ranges cover nine decades of current. Current and voltage are sampled simultaneously at 2 MS/s and streamed to the host over USB 3.0. Ethernet, microSD logging and an integrated display are also provided.
A dedicated 200 nA range with a 100 kΩ shunt resolves sleep currents in the low-nanoamp region.
An 8th-order Butterworth anti-alias filter on ±5 V rails preserves fast load steps at the full 2 MS/s sample rate.
The six ranges are spaced by a factor of 25 rather than the conventional 10. This reduces range transitions by approximately 30% during a typical sleep-to-active wake-up.
Each range transition is marked at the exact sample on which it occurs, so calibration is always applied to the correct samples.
Dedicated SAR ADCs share a single conversion edge, which eliminates skew between current and voltage. Power and energy are calculated from samples taken at the same instant.
SAR conversion avoids the group delay introduced by the decimation filters of delta-sigma converters.
The analogue front end and ADCs operate on a galvanically isolated domain with a transformer-isolated supply and digital isolators. This breaks ground loops between the device under test and the host PC.
The shunts are arranged as a series ladder. If the full 2 A briefly reaches the most sensitive range, the energy dissipated is approximately 90 times lower than in a standalone high-value shunt.
Low-tempco shunts rated at 10–25 ppm/°C are used in place of thick-film parts to keep drift low.
The complete two-channel 2 MS/s stream is carried over USB 3.0 SuperSpeed, with USB 2.0 High-Speed as a fallback. 10/100 Ethernet is available for remote operation.
An integrated 2-inch IPS colour display shows live readings, and captures can be logged to microSD without a PC.
The unit runs from a 12–15 V DC barrel jack or USB-C, with automatic source switching.
The FPGA timestamps samples at the source, and each data block carries a sequence number and overflow flag. A dropped block appears as a visible gap in the capture, never as a silent time shift.
